Whitesnake – “Shut up & kiss me ” – Official video

Following up a bit on last week, where we talked about Deep Purple’s “Burn” and also David Coverdale, this Music of the Week is a track from Whitesnake’s latest album of new material, released on October 5, 2019, titled *Flesh & Blood*.

This is the band’s 13th studio album with David Coverdale, Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra on guitar, Michael Devin on bass, Tommy Aldridge on drums, and Michele Luppi on keyboards.

When I listen to this album, I get a strong sense of ’80s hard rock – am I confused or what? Not at all, actually, that was the band’s intention all along.

Anyway, when the vibe is good old glam rock, at least this song fits right in!

Again…Could it be any more 80s? 🤣

But let’s rewind a bit in time for those who aren’t familiar with the band….

Whitesnake is one of the most iconic hard rock bands in the world, founded in England in 1978 by lead singer David Coverdale (who we’ve already mentioned about 10 times just in the first two paragraphs 😂) after he left Deep Purple.

The group became famous for blending blues rock with memorable ballads and iconic choruses that defined 1980s rock.

The real Golden Age was from 1987 to 1990, when Whitesnake changed their look, adopted the “hair metal” style, and won over the crowd.

But even after that glamorous phase, the band has always remained in the spotlight of the music industry. Their albums have consistently been very well received by music critics and their loyal fan base.

What keeps them in the news beyond their songs are also certain quirks, such as the constant turnover of band members over the years, including famous musicians and virtuoso guitarists like Steve Vai and John Sykes.

Another interesting fact dates back to the MTV era: their music videos were huge hits, receiving heavy airplay on TV, driven by the appearance of model Tawny Kitaen, who became an icon of that rock era and whom Coverdale married in February 1989.

I’m sure you recognized her from the iconic music videos for “Here I Go Again,” “Is This Love,” and “Still of the Night.”

Wow, this band has so many stories to tell that I get carried away, but let’s get back to the music of the week:

After a long eight-year hiatus following *Forevermore* (2011), “Flesh & Blood” marked the band’s return with all-new material, featuring “Shut Up & Kiss Me” as the album’s lead single.

The official music video (the one we included at the beginning of this post) had a strong nostalgic vibe reminiscent of MTV’s golden age, including the iconic white Jaguar used in the famous “Here I Go Again” video.

What makes the album even cooler is that, although David Coverdale can no longer hit the extremely high notes he used to in the 1980s (obviously due to natural vocal wear and tear), he has brilliantly adapted his tone to a lower, fuller range that fits perfectly with the album’s more… “mature” style.
